Your most important asset is your network and should be a major focus. Here are 7 ways to build stronger relationships:
1. Make Time.
Building relationships take time, energy, and effort. It seems as though we’re always short on time. It is so important to manage our time wisely and keep our priorities in line. Schedule special time to nurture the relationships that matter most. Even if this means taking 5 minutes to send a text or make a phone call.
2. Be Present.
You’ve made the time, now BE PRESENT. Put away all distractions and focus on connecting and developing your bond. This will help to build trust as you learn to rely on each other.
3. Listen More. Talk Less.
Listening shows you are engaged and interested in what the other person has to say. Ask questions and give them a recap of what you heard. Your active listening lets them know you genuinely care about their message and helps them to feel valued.
4. Give Consistently.
A person who builds great relationships doesn’t think about what’s in it for them, but more so of what they have to offer. This could mean being a mentor, helping to create other connections, or lending a hand when someone can use your friendship. Be creative!
5. Take the Blame.
Regardless of who may be at fault, sometimes it’s good to take the blame. The old adage says, “It is better to be kind than right.” Few acts are more selfless than taking the undeserved hit.
6. Practice Empathy.
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou. Being able to understand and share the feelings of another person can help you connect on a deeper level and also avoid potentially saying something hurtful. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and consider how what you say or do could make them feel.
7. Project Positivity.
Positivity is contagious. Having a good attitude and spreading positive vibes helps everyone around you feel uplifted, too! Smile, laugh, share exciting news. Soon you will be surrounded by other positive people.
